Starry Skies Along the St. Louis River

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Starry Skies Along the St. Louis River on Sunday, February 9th. This event was hosted by the St. Louis River Alliance, in partner with Bob King, a local Amateur Astronomer.

Bob’s passion for the sky took us on a path to reduce light pollution, explore the constellations, and talk through how we can make a change in our community. After searching the partly cloudy sky for stars, planets, and constellations, Mikayla led the group on a walk to the newly restored Spirit Lake Delta Cap. With an almost full moon, we were able to keep our headlamps at bay and enjoy the darkness with one another for the entire walk.

Barb Huberty, St. Louis River Area of Concern Coordinator for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, explained the remediation process at Spirit Lake Delta Cap upon walking over the bridge, and answered questions from the group. Thanks for getting outside with us!

We encourage you to learn more about light pollution and the night sky. One way to do so, is to download the free app ‘Stellarium Mobile’ to help identify planets, and constellations. Also, check out Bob King’s book ‘Magnificent Aurora’.
