ST. LOUIS RIVER AREA OF CONCERN UPDATES: Munger Landing Closer 2022-2023

munger landing.png

A contaminated sediment cleanup project is planned for the Munger Landing area, to remove approximately 100,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediments. Contaminants include PCBs, dioxins/furans, mercury, PAHs, and heavy metals; and present a direct risk to human health and the environment.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has applied to conduct the cleanup through a Great Lakes Legacy Act partnership with US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and other non-Federal sponsors

During project construction, the Munger Landing boat launch and parking areas will be closed to watercraft, vehicle, and pedestrian traffic from the spring of 2022, through the fall of 2023.

Alternative access for the Saint Louis River is recommended at Boy Scout Landing and Rice’s Point. An opportunity for the public to comment on the MPCA’s environmental review of the proposed project will be noticed in October.
