Planting Dune Grass - Wisconsin Point (photos)

The St. Louis River Alliance helped plant dune grass at the Piping Plover habitat site on Wisconsin Point!

Led by the UWS Lake Superior Research Institute, the St. Louis River Alliance, Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve, @folsr.wi, and Wisconsin DNR helped plant close to 17,000 plugs of dune grass (ammophila brevilligulata) on 1.5 acres. This planting will help enhance the stability of the foraging (non-nesting) habitat area by serving as a "wind break". This will cause any sand that was picked up by the wind on the beach front to settle before reaching the predator fence, preventing further build up of sand at it’s base.

This species is adaptive to grow in these harsh conditions (heavy winds) and out grow any sand deposition that occurs around it.

Thanks to all of our Piping Plover monitors and staff who stopped by to put some plants in the ground. We can not wait to see the site in a few months, and the coming years, as the grass matures!
