Job Title: Neighborhood Leader - St. Louis River Estuary (SLRE) National Water Trail 

Reports to: SLRE National Water Trail Coordinator

Wages: $18- $20 per hour

Category and hours: This is a part-time position, with each person expected to work up to 416 hours per year over the three-year grant period. Hours are flexible and vary throughout the seasons as directed by the National Water Trail Coordinator. A typical schedule would be an average of 7-15 hours per week May through October and 5-10 hours per month for November through April.

Job Description:

The St. Louis River Alliance is seeking two dedicated individuals to serve as National Water Trail Neighborhood Leaders to help create strong relationships and connections to the St. Louis River. The goal is to foster community engagement and awareness of the National Water Trail by promoting organizational events and river access points, and resources related to the trail. These positions report to the National Water Trail Coordinator.

The ideal candidate will be well-networked, have leadership experience, exceptional communication and outreach skills, and the ability to foster an inclusive atmosphere that welcomes community members to experience the St. Louis River with comfort and confidence. Prior outdoor recreation experience is not necessary, rather we are looking for someone who can help make the water and our events inviting and feel safe/accessible.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Connecting with individuals and families through neighborhood community groups, one- on-one personal relationships, nonprofits, and organizational partnerships.

  • Promoting National Water Trail events through social media, networking, tabling and outreach opportunities, etc. 

  • Assisting with and helping implement organizational events including planning, set-up, implementation, and take-down.

  • Providing input and advice to determine what events to hold and how to best serve the community.

Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage diverse community members.

  • Experience in community outreach or event coordination preferred.

  • Knowledge or interest in outdoor recreational activities, particularly water-related activities, is advantageous.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends, dependent on event schedule.

About the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail
The St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail is a multi-use waterway enabling the public to experience the St. Louis River Estuary amidst the urban landscape of the Twin Ports. The Water Trail includes 11 loop routes for paddlers and boaters of all skill levels and abilities to build their own memories and relationships to the St. Louis River.

The St. Louis River Alliance is the proud manager of the SLRE National Water Trail, and continues to lead a working group of representatives from Minnesota and Wisconsin to implement the necessary steps to carry out the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail Master Plan to ensure the trail's success. In October 2020, the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail was officially designated by the United States Secretary of the Interior, making it the newest National Water Trail in Minnesota.
