ABSTRACT: Since the designation of the St. Louis River Estuary Area of Concern in 1987, concerned citizens, agencies and governments have collaborated to move the AOC closer to delisting through restoration and remediation projects. The success of this collaborative effort is transforming the river and creating a path to a higher quality of life.
The impacts of this transformation are now becoming clear in the revitalization of the river communities, better access to the river, new trails, and a heightened appreciation of this resource.
One of the results of a cleaner river is the newly designated St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail. As the manager of the water trail, the St. Louis River Alliance is facilitating an advisory council to implement steps of a master plan.
