SLRA Recognition and Awards

The St. Louis River Citizens Action Committee received the Lake Superior Binational Program 2005 Environmental Stewardship Award for outstanding actions that protect and restore the Lake Superior Basin.

“This nonprofit group has been working on behalf of the St. Louis River (the largest US tributary to Lake Superior) since 1996. Group goals include: Continue citizen participation to complete the river’s RAP, restore important habitat, educate the public, and facilitate recommended remedial actions. Accomplishments include: Coordinated the development of a habitat plan between all resource management agencies (federal, two states, tribal, and local), which each agency now uses to manage the area; restored habitats at Grassy Point, Miller Creek, Hearding Island, and Wisconsin Point; produced a citizen’s guide to habitat and unique areas on the St. Louis River; established a Watershed guardianship Program for school groups to promote stewardship of the river; developed a photography contest and Lake Superior calendar; facilitates dialogue with environmentalists and regulators to work together on management issues; promotes pollution prevention efforts and new storm water management actions; and developed educational posters about wild rice ecosystem protection and runoff reduction actions.”
