Protect St. Louis County Waters
Learn How to Identify and Report Aquatic Invasive Species!
The St. Louis River Alliance’s AIS Sentry Program is a citizen science based early detection program. It is designed to empower community members to recognize and report possible AIS sightings from across the region.
The new Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Sentry Training Program connects you to the river by helping you learn about its delicate ecosystem, while getting out onto the water by canoe or kayak to help keep her in balance.
To become a certified AIS Sentry Monitor, participants must complete the online curriculum and get out on the water for a field training session. More information below.
What is included in the Program?
- An Aquatic Invasive Species Manual
- The Sentry Online Training Program
- Data Sheets for monitoring
- An On-the-Water Sentry Training, including a free kayak/canoe session
- Lake and river ecology and its relationship to AIS
- How to identify common aquatic plants and animals, both native and invasive
- How to conduct surveys of native and invasive species in the field (on the water)
- How to record data and report findings
Our Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Sentry Training Program will equip you with everything you need to know to get out on the water and notice any potential changes in the ecosystem.
In addition to learning about native aquatic plants, animals, and their habitats, AIS Sentry Monitors also survey waterbodies within St. Louis County for new introductions of AIS to collect data and make reports of potential AIS threats to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
Anyone can be an Aquatic Invasive Species Sentry—no prior knowledge or experience is necessary.
Education is essential in preventing new introductions and the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species.
